Hochwanner
Mountain Alpine peak in Bavaria, prominent Wetterstein mountain
In the Wetterstein range, Hochwanner (2,744 m) ranks as Germany’s second-highest peak; mountaineers pursue long alpine routes, exposed ridges and wide views into German and Austrian Alps.
Hochwanner is a mountain in the Wetterstein range in the Bavarian Alps of Germany, with an elevation of about 2,744 metres. It is one of Germany’s highest summits and forms a prominent limestone massif near the German-Austrian border.
The peak is less frequented than the neighbouring Zugspitze but is known among experienced mountaineers for long ridge routes and exposed climbs; approaches typically involve significant elevation gain and alpine terrain. The mountain’s geology is dominated by steep limestone faces and karst features characteristic of the Wetterstein massif.
Hochwanner lies in southern Bavaria close to the Austrian border and is accessed from valleys north and south of the Wetterstein crest; the nearest well-known town for access and services is Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the north-west, with the summit sitting within the high alpine zone of the range.
- Height and rank: At about 2,744 metres in elevation, it is generally cited as the second-highest peak in Germany after the Zugspitze and is primarily approached by hikers with alpine experience.
- Alpine conditions: Routes are relatively remote and demand good route-finding skills; weather can change rapidly and parts of the approaches include steep limestone terrain and narrow ridgelines.
How to Get to Hochwanner #
Hochwanner is a high peak in the Wetterstein massif near Garmisch‑Partenkirchen in Bavaria. The usual access point for hikes is the Garmisch‑Partenkirchen area; drive from Garmisch‑Partenkirchen on local roads into the Reintal valley (the B23 is the main road into Garmisch from the north/south) to reach trailheads. From those trailheads expect a long mountain hike and alpine terrain to reach the summit.
Tips for Visiting Hochwanner #
- Approach Hochwanner from the Garmisch‑Partenkirchen/Wetterstein side and use the valley villages around Garmisch as your base-public transport will get you to trailheads but alpine routes require full mountain experience.
- Plan ascents in stable summer weather (typically July-September) when permanent snow is least likely; many routes are long and exposed, so start very early to avoid afternoon storms and to beat the small but steady flow of day-hikers to nearby Zugspitze.
- If you are not experienced with high-alpine navigation and exposed ridges, hire a local mountain guide-Hochwanner is much less walked than Zugspitze and route-finding can be demanding.
Best Time to Visit Hochwanner #
Best visited in summer (June-September) when alpine routes are most likely to be clear of persistent snow and conditions are safest for hiking.
