Main image

Hochosterwitz Castle is a medieval hilltop castle in Carinthia, Austria, notable for its strong defensive position on a prominent rock above the surrounding plain. It is one of the region’s best preserved fortified sites and a visible landmark from the surrounding countryside.

The site is known for its long fortified approach that rises to the main complex and for panoramic views across the valley; visitors also see historic rooms and an arms collection inside the castle. The layout concentrates defensive features along the ascent, with multiple gates and curtain walls creating a stepped defensive line.

The castle has medieval origins and was transformed over time by successive owners; it became the property of the Khevenhüller family in the 16th century, who carried out renovations and shaped much of the site seen today. It remained an important defensive and residential stronghold through the early modern period.

Hochosterwitz sits above the village area near Sankt Georgen in central Carinthia, roughly to the north of the Längsee area and within driving distance of Klagenfurt. The site occupies a conspicuous rocky outcrop that dominates the local landscape.

  • Access: Reached by a steep, fortified approach with a series of defensive gates and ramparts that climb the rock on which the castle stands.
  • Ownership: Owned by the Khevenhüller family since the 16th century, the castle remains privately held and is a prominent Carinthian landmark.

Tips for Visiting Hochosterwitz Castle #

  • Arrive early in the morning (shortly after opening) to avoid coach-group peak times and to get clearer light for the extensive views across the Carinthian plain from the castle terrace.
  • Enter and approach from the village below (Sankt Georgen am Längsee) and follow the historic uphill path through the castle's famous sequence of 14 defensive gates - allow time to walk slowly so you can inspect the fortifications and displays at each gate.
  • Many visitors focus on the main courtyard; spend extra time on the battlements and terrace galleries for the best panorama and to see defensive features that are easily missed from the central areas.
