How to Get to Hochkar #
From Vienna, drive roughly 2 hours (about 150 km) via the A1 motorway and then local B-routes to Göstling an der Ybbs; from there follow signs to the Hochkar valley station (allow 25-40 minutes on mountain roads). Regional trains reach Göstling an der Ybbs; from the station take a short taxi or local bus to the valley lift.
Tips for Visiting Hochkar #
- If coming for ski touring, park at the valley station and take the Hochkarbahn early - afternoon winds often pick up and can make ridge travel unpleasant.
- Check local avalanche reports in winter; the north faces hold snow late into spring and attract experienced off-piste riders.
- On a clear day, walk up 15-30 minutes from the upper lift station for a quieter panorama - most visitors stop at the top station.
