Hobbiton Movie Set
Area Film set in Waikato recreating The Shire
Near Matamata’s rolling pastures, the Hobbiton Movie Set offers guided tours of the film-built village, round doors and green hillsides; visitors come for cinema history, photography and themed cafés.
The Hobbiton Movie Set is a permanent film set and tourist attraction on a working farm in the Waikato region of New Zealand, near the town of Matamata. It was created for the film adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels and is maintained as a visitor site.
The attraction is laid out as an outdoor walking tour of the Shire film set, featuring recreated hobbit-holes, gardens and the central rustic features of the village. Guided tours typically last about two hours and follow a fixed route through the set, with multiple daily departures.
The site includes iconic set pieces such as the round-doored hobbit homes clustered on the hillside, the Green Dragon Inn where guests are served refreshments, and a working mill and pond that act as photo stops along the route. The set is maintained year-round for visitors and seasonal events are occasionally hosted on site.
The set was constructed for Peter Jackson’s film productions and left in place after filming to be refurbished and turned into a permanent tourist attraction. Elements of the site were expanded and reworked for later film productions, and the property has been preserved and managed to retain the on-screen appearance.
The set sits on private farmland near Matamata on New Zealand’s North Island in the Waikato region, accessible by road from Matamata and other nearby towns. Official tours depart from an on-site visitor center close to the farm entrance.
