The Historical Complex of Split with the Palace of Diocletian is a UNESCO World Heritage site in Split, Croatia, centered on the Roman palace built for Emperor Diocletian around 305 AD. The palace nucleus and its later urban fabric form the core of Split’s historic old town.

The site is dominated by Diocletian’s Palace, a large fortified retirement residence whose walls and internal streets now form much of Split’s medieval and modern centre. Key highlights inside the palace include the paved Peristyle courtyard, the vaulted substructures known as the cellars, and the narrow lanes that contain shops and residences. The palace fabric contains numerous Roman and medieval architectural elements embedded in everyday urban life.

The complex also includes the former imperial mausoleum, now the Cathedral of St. Domnius, which is one of the continent’s oldest cathedral buildings in continuous use. Visitors routinely climb the adjacent bell tower for panoramic views across the palace rooftops and the Adriatic.

Construction began in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries under Emperor Diocletian; in the early Middle Ages the palace was reoccupied and transformed into an urban centre as populations moved into the Roman enclosure. Over subsequent centuries the Roman structures were adapted into churches, homes and public buildings, creating the layered historic fabric visible today.

The complex sits on the Adriatic coast in central Dalmatia at the historic core of the city of Split, directly on the waterfront. The palace precinct is contiguous with the modern city and is easily reached from Split’s port and rail station.

  • Urban integration: The palace core is integrated with Split's living city fabric so much of the Roman structure is occupied by shops, homes and cafes rather than separated behind museum barriers.
  • Best time to visit: For clearer photos with fewer people, the Peristyle is quietest early morning and late evening when cruise-ship and tour-group traffic is lower.

What to See #

  • Peristyle (Palace courtyard): A paved ceremonial courtyard at the heart of Diocletian's Palace framed by monumental columns and steps; historically the palace's public core and now the focus of tourists and events.
  • Diocletian's Cellars (substructures): Below the palace proper, largely intact vaulted substructures that once supported the imperial apartments; today they house displays and are used as exhibition and performance spaces.
  • Cathedral of St. Domnius: Originally the emperor's mausoleum, converted into a cathedral; an early Christian building that remains in religious use and adjoins a bell tower with city views accessed by a climb.
  • Riva and Old Town streets: The waterfront promenade and the network of narrow streets and squares that grew from the palace fabric, containing shops, cafes and many of Split's principal public spaces.
