Main image

The Historic Fortified City of Carcassonne is a medieval walled town in southern France noted for its extensive fortifications and medieval urban fabric. Its visible fortifications date mainly to the medieval period and were substantially restored in the 19th century.

The cité presents a compact fortified core with a double ring of walls and numerous towers that form a near-continuous circuit approximately 3 kilometres long; many sections include walkable ramparts and panoramic views over the surrounding plain. Inside the walls are narrow medieval streets, the Château Comtal and the Basilica of Saints Nazarius and Celsus.

Origins go back to Gallo-Roman times, with major fortification and urban development during the medieval centuries, particularly the 12th to 14th centuries. The site underwent a comprehensive 19th-century restoration led by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, which restored and in some places reconstructed gateways, towers and battlements.

Perched on a rocky spur above the Aude floodplain, the fortified city lies adjacent to the modern town of Carcassonne in Occitanie, roughly 90 kilometres southeast of Toulouse.

  • Ramparts and towers: The walled Cité has roughly 3 kilometres of curtain walls and some 50 towers arranged in a double enceinte, providing a continuous circuit for visitors to walk in parts.
  • Restoration history: Extensive 19th-century restoration by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc reshaped many visible elements; this restoration is a key part of the site's current appearance.

  • Enter via one of the lesser-used gates (for example approach from the Bastide side and climb up) to avoid the biggest queues at the main tourist entrances and to get a quieter route onto the ramparts.
  • Make time to walk the full circuit of the ramparts-the panoramic views over the Aude valley are often the highlight but are overlooked by visitors who stay only on the main street.
