Historic City of Trogir
Historical Site Island-adjacent medieval town with Romanesque and Gothic architecture
On a small Dalmatian island, Trogir’s medieval core holds a Romanesque-Gothic cathedral, tight alleys and a working harbour. Visitors stroll ramparts, study sculpted portals and use the town as a launch point for nearby islands.
The Historic City of Trogir is a medieval town on a small island on the Adriatic coast of Croatia, in Split-Dalmatia County. Its core preserves a continuous range of architecture from the Hellenistic period through the Renaissance, and the site was inscribed as a protected historic ensemble.
The island’s compact historic centre is dominated by the Cathedral of St. Lawrence with its richly carved Romanesque portal, civic palaces, and a waterfront fortress, Kamerlengo. Stone streets are tightly wound between houses and plazas, creating a dense ensemble that can be explored on foot in a few hours.
Trogir originated as the Greek colony Tragurion in the 3rd century BC and developed as a Roman and medieval port town. From the 13th to the 17th centuries the town’s public and private architecture was constructed and remodelled, with notable Venetian and Dalmatian influences; fortifications were strengthened in later medieval and early modern periods.
The town sits on a small island between the Croatian mainland and the island of Čiovo, on the central Dalmatian coast. It is west of the city of Split and accessible by road and short bridges linking the islands to the mainland.
- Radovan portal: The **Cathedral of St. Lawrence** contains a famous 13th-century carved portal by the sculptor Radovan, a highlight for visitors interested in medieval stonework.
- Best views and timing: Climb or walk along the waterfront near Kamerlengo for clear views of the island layout and for sunset photography; the narrow streets are best seen early morning to avoid crowds.
