Historic Centre of the Town of Olinda
Historical Site Colonial town centre with brightly painted Baroque churches
Perched on a coastal hill in Pernambuco, Olinda’s colonial center draws visitors for baroque churches like São Bento, cobblestone streets, panoramic views over Recife, lively Carnival street parades, and handicraft markets showcasing regional arts and ceramics.
The Historic Centre of the Town of Olinda is a colonial-era urban ensemble on a coastal hillside in Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil, founded in the 16th century and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. It is one of Brazil’s best-preserved examples of Portuguese colonial town planning.
The area contains a dense concentration of churches, convents, civic buildings and tiled houses set along narrow, winding streets. Highlights include several major churches and monasteries from the 16th to 18th centuries and elevated plazas that give panoramic views over the coastal plain and the nearby city of Recife. The streets themselves and the built fabric are a primary draw for photography, architecture and cultural festivals.
The town centre was laid out and developed by Portuguese colonists from the 16th century onward and grew wealthy on the sugar economy of the Pernambuco region. It suffered damage during 17th-century conflicts but retained its colonial street plan and many historic buildings; conservation efforts in the 20th century led to its UNESCO listing in 1982.
Olinda sits on low coastal hills immediately north of the Recife metropolitan area in Pernambuco, overlooking the Atlantic coastal plain. The historic district occupies the older, hilltop part of the town and is a short drive from Recife’s urban core.
- Viewpoint: Best panoramic views are from Alto da Sé, which sits above the historic centre and overlooks the coastal plain toward Recife.
- Carnival: Annual street Carnival features bonecos gigantes (giant puppets) and informal blocos, typically held during Brazil's Carnival season in February or March.
