Historic Centre of Siena

The Historic Centre of Siena is a medieval hill city in Tuscany, Italy, celebrated for its Gothic architecture, compact historic core and the shell-shaped civic space of Piazza del Campo. The centre preserves urban and architectural ensembles from the 12th to the 15th centuries and is an important example of medieval town planning.

Piazza del Campo is the focal point and is surrounded by important civic buildings including the Palazzo Pubblico and Torre del Mangia; the adjacent Duomo contains richly decorated marble façades, sculptural programmes and important interior artworks. The city is also known for the Palio, a traditional horse race with deep historical ties to Siena’s neighbourhoods.

Siena developed as an independent medieval commune and built most of its principal public and religious buildings between the 12th and 14th centuries. The city’s institutions and elites invested in public architecture and civic spaces that shaped the present-day historic fabric.

The historic centre occupies a hilltop in central Tuscany, with streets descending into the surrounding Sienese hills. The city is an established regional centre in Tuscany and its centre retains a largely unchanged medieval street plan.
