The Historic Centre of Siena is a medieval hill city in Tuscany, Italy, celebrated for its Gothic architecture, compact historic core and the shell-shaped civic space of Piazza del Campo. The centre preserves urban and architectural ensembles from the 12th to the 15th centuries and is an important example of medieval town planning.

Piazza del Campo is the focal point and is surrounded by important civic buildings including the Palazzo Pubblico and Torre del Mangia; the adjacent Duomo contains richly decorated marble façades, sculptural programmes and important interior artworks. The city is also known for the Palio, a traditional horse race with deep historical ties to Siena’s neighbourhoods.

Siena developed as an independent medieval commune and built most of its principal public and religious buildings between the 12th and 14th centuries. The city’s institutions and elites invested in public architecture and civic spaces that shaped the present-day historic fabric.

The historic centre occupies a hilltop in central Tuscany, with streets descending into the surrounding Sienese hills. The city is an established regional centre in Tuscany and its centre retains a largely unchanged medieval street plan.

  • The Palio dates: The Palio is a traditional horse race run in the Piazza del Campo on 2 July and 16 August each year, a major cultural event tied to the city's historic neighbourhoods.
  • Best viewpoint: For broad panoramic views of the city and surrounding countryside, climb the Torre del Mangia beside the Palazzo Pubblico in Piazza del Campo.

How to Get to Historic Centre of Siena #

By train or bus from Florence: Regionale/Trenitalia trains run from Firenze Santa Maria Novella to Siena (direct regional services), with a journey time typically around 1-1.5 hours. Intercity and SITA buses also run from Florence’s main bus station (Firenze SMN) to Siena’s bus terminus.

By car: Siena is about 75 km south of Florence via the Strada Statale 2 (Via Cassia, SS2); driving time is typically around 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic. Siena’s historic centre (Piazza del Campo) is a short walk from the city transport hubs-approximately 10-15 minutes (around 1 km) on foot from the Siena railway/bus station.

Tips for Visiting Historic Centre of Siena #

  • Go at first light to enjoy Piazza del Campo and the narrow streets with far fewer tour groups; early access also makes it easier to reserve a timed slot for Torre del Mangia without long queues.
  • If your priority is Piazza del Campo and the Duomo, enter the centro storico via Porta Romana (south) for the most direct walk to both sites and fewer uphill streets than some northern approaches.
  • Buy a combined ticket for the Duomo complex (including the Baptistery/museum) and reserve Torre del Mangia tickets in advance - many visitors miss the Duomo museum and Santa Maria della Scala museum which have excellent collections and less congestion than the cathedral itself.
  • Take a guided walk focused on Contrada history and lesser-known churches: independent visitors frequently overlook small civic museums and the defensive walls that reveal Siena's social geography.
