Historic Centre of San Gimignano
Historical Site Hill town famed for numerous medieval stone towers
San Gimignano’s hilltop town is known for its cluster of medieval towers, Romanesque churches and narrow streets. Travelers visit for tower views, vernaccia wine and walks into surrounding Tuscan vineyards.
San Gimignano is a walled hill town in Tuscany, Italy, noted for its exceptionally well-preserved medieval tower houses and skyline dating to the medieval period. The town’s compact historic centre is a UNESCO-recognised example of a medieval urban settlement.
The core is dominated by its skyline of brick towers - 14 survive today - and two principal squares, Piazza della Cisterna and Piazza del Duomo, which concentrate civic and religious buildings. Streets are narrow and largely unchanged from the medieval layout, making the skyline and the view from the towers the key attractions for visitors.
The towers were erected mainly between the 12th and 14th centuries by prominent local families as symbols of wealth and power; many houses and public buildings date from the same period. Over time the town’s fortunes changed and no large-scale modern replacement of the medieval fabric took place, which contributed to the high degree of preservation seen today.
The historic centre sits on a hilltop in the Val d’Elsa in central Tuscany, between the cities of Florence and Siena. The town occupies a compact ridge with surrounding agricultural countryside of vineyards and olive groves.
- Medieval towers: The town retains 14 of its original medieval tower houses, which formed an iconic skyline and were built mainly between the 12th and 14th centuries.
- Best viewpoint: Climb the Torre Grossa for panoramic views over the surrounding Val d'Elsa countryside; the tower is one of the few open to the public.
What to See #
- Piazza della Cisterna: A compact medieval core centred on the two principal squares, Piazza della Cisterna and Piazza del Duomo, each lined with historic houses and public buildings.
- Piazza del Duomo / Palazzo Comunale: The civic square dominated by the Palazzo Comunale and the adjacent Torre del Podestà; contains medieval public buildings and access to the Torre Grossa.
- Torre Grossa: A surviving tower house open to visitors with panoramic views over the town and surrounding Tuscan countryside; the tallest of the surviving towers.
- City walls and gates: Sections of the original town walls and gates that define the medieval footprint of the town and are still visible around the hilltop core.
