Historic Centre of Naples preserves an extensive urban core with medieval, Renaissance and Baroque layers centred on narrow streets, churches and palaces. The area is noted for its concentration of historic religious buildings and urban fabric that developed over many centuries.

Prominent elements include the long east-west thoroughfare known as Spaccanapoli, the Duomo with the cult of San Gennaro, and the royal and civic fortifications near the waterfront. Museums and cloisters within the centre also hold important archaeological and art collections.

Naples developed continuously from antiquity through the medieval and early modern periods, expanding under various rulers including Norman, Angevin and Spanish kings, which produced the present mix of styles. Urban growth in the 17th and 18th centuries added many Baroque churches and palaces.
