The Historic Centre of Guimarães and the Couros Zone is a medieval urban ensemble in northern Portugal that preserves a compact historic fabric of fortifications, palaces, churches and narrow streets. The site is strongly associated with Portugal’s early medieval history and national identity.

Key elements include a medieval castle and the late-medieval Palace of the Dukes, which together anchor a network of streets, squares and ecclesiastical buildings. The Couros Zone comprises adjoining streets and workshops that historically linked the core to surrounding craft and residential areas.

The centre developed during the medieval period and was central to regional politics and dynastic events in the 12th century and later; many structures date from the medieval through early modern periods and have been preserved or restored to reflect their historical functions.

Guimarães stands in the Braga District of northern Portugal, forming a compact historic core within the modern municipality and set amid rolling northern Portuguese landscapes.

What to See#

• Guimarães Castle: A medieval castle and fortress complex that forms a prominent landmark in the city’s historic core and is associated with the early formation of the Portuguese state.
• Palace of the Dukes (Paço dos Duques): A 15th-century palace that later became the residence of the Dukes of Braganza, now housing a museum with period rooms and collections related to local history.

Take Comboios de Portugal regional trains from Porto (Campanhã or São Bento stations) to Guimarães station. The historic centre is about 1.5-2 km from Guimarães station (roughly a 20-30 minute walk) or a short taxi ride. By car, Guimarães is about 50-55 km northeast of Porto, typically a 40-50 minute drive via the A3.

• Walk from Guimarães train station along Rua de Santa Maria into Largo da Oliveira-this direct approach drops you into the heart of the historic centre and avoids wandering the newer parts of town first.
• Visit the Paço dos Duques and Guimarães Castle early in the morning to beat coach groups and to enjoy the castle parapets and medieval streets with far fewer people around.
• Venture beyond the main square toward the narrow lanes behind the castle-these medieval streets and small artisan shops in the Couros Zone are often missed by visitors who only see the principal monuments.
