Évora is a historic city in Portugal’s Alentejo region with a continuous record from Roman times through the medieval and early modern periods. It preserves monuments from the Roman Temple to medieval churches and 16th-century university buildings.

Key sights include a Roman colonnaded temple from the 1st century AD, the hilltop Évora Cathedral, and the 16th-century Chapel of Bones within the old town. Narrow lanes surround a central Praça where civic and ecclesiastical buildings cluster.

The settlement originated in the Roman period, expanded in the medieval era and became an important religious and administrative centre in the early modern period, which brought university foundations and convents. Many buildings show successive layers of Roman, medieval and Renaissance construction.

Évora lies inland in southern Portugal on a plateau of the Alentejo, surrounded by agricultural plains and rolling cork-oak landscape, with the historic core forming a compact, walkable area.

  • Walking visit: The old town is compact, and many principal monuments are within short walking distance of the town's central square, making it suited to on-foot visits.
