Hexamilion wall
Archaeological Site Byzantine defensive wall across the Isthmus of Corinth
Stretching across the Peloponnese, the Hexamilion Wall near Corinth is a medieval defensive barrier; history visitors examine its ruined fortifications and Byzantine engineering.
The Hexamilion wall is a long defensive barrier that crosses the Isthmus of Corinth in the Peloponnese region of Greece; its name means “six-mile wall.” It was built to block land access to the Peloponnese and is notable for its extensive linear remains.
Remnants of the wall, including stretches of masonry, towers and occasional gate remains, can be seen along the narrow isthmus between the Gulf of Corinth and the Saronic Gulf. The surviving sections give a clear sense of the wall’s scale over the roughly 10-kilometre crossing.
Constructed and rebuilt in different periods of late antiquity and the Byzantine era as a defensive measure to protect the Peloponnese from incursions, the wall was repaired and modified several times over the medieval period. It fell into partial ruin after repeated military actions and changing strategic needs.
The wall spans the Isthmus of Corinth, the narrow land bridge that links the Peloponnese peninsula to mainland Greece, immediately south of the modern city of Corinth.
- Length: Runs across the Isthmus of Corinth for roughly six Roman miles, a distance of about 10 kilometres, forming a strategic east-west barrier.
