Het Steen
Castle Medieval Antwerp fortress now a museum and landmark
A medieval stone fortress on Antwerp’s riverfront, once the city’s gateway; visitors walk ramparts, explore small exhibitions and continue into the old port and historic centre.
Het Steen is a medieval stone fortress located on the left bank of the river Scheldt in Antwerp, Belgium, and is one of the city’s oldest surviving buildings. The name means “The Stone” in Dutch and the structure originally formed part of Antwerp’s medieval fortifications.
The site functions today as a prominent riverside landmark and public access point to the historic city waterfront; its compact footprint is visible from quays and river promenades. Interpretive displays and riverfront pathways around the building make it a frequent photo stop for visitors exploring Antwerp’s old port area.
Construction on the core of the fortress began in the medieval period, with major works dating to the 13th century when Antwerp expanded and fortified its riverfront; over centuries the building has been repurposed for town, military and civic uses. In modern times it has been adapted for public and cultural uses while retaining its historic masonry.
Het Steen stands at the river edge in central Antwerp, immediately adjacent to the Scheldt and within walking distance of the historic city centre and the main quays on the city’s waterfront.
