Heraion of Argos

The Heraion of Argos is an ancient sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Hera located near the modern city of Argos in the Peloponnese. It served as a major regional cult center with archaeological remains spanning several periods.

Ruins at the site include multiple temple foundations, altars and large open precincts; the most visible remains date to the Archaic and Classical periods and show successive building phases. Stone blocks, column drums and foundation courses are scattered across the site, giving a sense of the sanctuary’s original scale. Interpretive signs and exposed excavation areas allow visitors to follow the layout of the sacred complex.

The sanctuary was used from the Mycenaean period into Roman times, with successive temples and re-building phases reflecting changing architectural styles and cult practice. Excavations carried out from the 19th century onward revealed the sequence of construction and many architectural fragments.

The site sits on the Argolic plain near the modern city of Argos in northeastern Peloponnese, within a landscape that also includes other major archaeological sites. It is accessible from Argos and the surrounding towns and is often visited together with nearby classical sites.

• Practical tip: Site is largely open-air with few standing buildings, so bring sun and rain protection and sturdy shoes for uneven ground.

• Temple foundations: Foundations and ruined columns of several successive temple phases are visible across the sanctuary, with open altar areas and scattered architectural fragments from archaic and classical constructions.
• Altar precinct: A large sacred precinct and altar area where votive offerings and ritual activity took place, visible as low masonry and earthworks.
