Heraclea Sintica is an ancient city ruin in southwestern Bulgaria that preserves remains from Hellenistic and Roman periods. The site includes city remains and architectural traces that document long-term urban occupation.
Excavations have uncovered walls, public structures and domestic remains that illustrate the city’s layout and historical development under Hellenistic and Roman influence. The site is of regional archaeological importance for the study of classical urbanism in the Balkans.
The city was founded and developed in the Hellenistic era and persisted into Roman times, with material culture reflecting continuity and change across those periods. Archaeological work has proceeded in phases and continues to refine the site’s chronology and functions.
