Heraclea Lyncestis

Heraclea Lyncestis is an ancient city founded in the 4th century BC near present-day Bitola. It became an important regional centre under Hellenistic and Roman rule and is now an archaeological park known for mosaics and public buildings.

Key visible remains include an amphitheatre, public baths, basilicas with well-preserved mosaic floors and sections of the city plan showing streets and walls. The mosaics and Christian basilicas date mainly to the late Roman and early Byzantine periods and are notable for their decorative detail.

The city was established in the Hellenistic era and experienced growth and rebuilding under Roman and Byzantine administrations, then declined in the medieval period. Excavations in the 20th century revealed many of the major monuments now presented to the public.

The site lies close to Bitola in southwestern North Macedonia, a short drive from the town centre along the road network linking Bitola with other regional centres.
