Heraclea (Lucania)
Archaeological Site Ancient Greek city ruins with Hellenistic foundations
The archaeological site of Heraclea in Lucania contains urban ruins and nearby museum finds from Greek and Roman periods; visitors explore street plans, foundations, and recovered artifacts.
Heraclea (Lucania) is an ancient Greek city site on the Ionian coast of Basilicata near the modern town of Policoro, notable as a centre of Magna Graecia and for its role in Classical-era conflicts.
The visible remains include exposed foundations, stretches of defensive masonry and funerary areas that illustrate the city’s plan; many smaller finds are exhibited in the nearby museum. Excavated features are spread across a low coastal plain a few kilometres inland from the shoreline.
Heraclea was founded in the archaic period by Greek settlers and became an important urban centre in Lucania. The site is also known from history for the Battle of Heraclea in 280 BC; occupation and fortunes changed through the Roman and late antique periods and the settlement was eventually abandoned.
The ruins sit beside the modern municipality of Policoro on the Ionian coast of Basilicata, within a low-lying coastal plain. The archaeological area and the Museo Nazionale della Siritide are the standard points of access for visitors.
- Museum access: Many finds from the site are on display in Policoro rather than at the open-air ruins, so plan to visit the museum for the best context and small artefacts.
What to See #
- Archaeological area: The main open-air archaeological area preserves foundations of the ancient urban layout, defensive walls and funerary areas visible as exposed stone courses and excavation trenches; remains are spread across a site a few kilometres inland from the Ionian coast.
- Museo Nazionale della Siritide: Museo Nazionale della Siritide in Policoro houses many of the artefacts recovered at Heraclea, including pottery, inscriptions and grave goods from excavations of the site and nearby necropoleis.
