Hengsteysee is a reservoir near the towns of Hagen and Herdecke in North Rhine‑Westphalia. By car it is about 15-25 km from Dortmund city centre (roughly a 20-35 minute drive depending on route and traffic), accessible via local roads off the A1/A45 corridor; parking and lakeside access points are on the local municipal roads around the reservoir. It can also be reached by regional rail to Hagen or Herdecke followed by a short local bus or taxi ride to the lakeshore.
Tips for Visiting Hengsteysee #
- Visit early on weekdays or late afternoons to avoid weekend crowds of windsurfers and day-trippers that gather around Hengsteysee's main recreation areas.
- Access the lake from the RuhrtalRadweg (Ruhr Valley cycle route)-the path runs along the shore and gives several low-traffic viewpoints where you can watch wind- and paddle-sports activity without needing to find parking.
- Head to the western end near the dam for the clearest panorama of the reservoir and the spillway; that area tends to be quieter than the main picnic and sailing spots and is good for photography at golden hour.
