Hatvan is easiest reached via Budapest Ferenc Liszt Airport (BUD) and Hungary's rail network. The town has a MÁV station with frequent regional connections to Budapest and nearby cities.
Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD): From BUD you usually transfer via Budapest city centre. Take the 100E airport bus to Deák Ferenc tér (about 35-45 min, ~1,200 HUF / €3.2) then a MÁV or regional train from Budapest Keleti to Hatvan (about 1h-1h20, 1,000-2,000 HUF / €2.7-5.5). A direct taxi or private transfer from the airport to Hatvan takes roughly 50-70 min and costs around 12,000-18,000 HUF (€32-48).
Miskolc-Ferenc Liszt Airport / Debrecen / Regional airports: These smaller airports do not have convenient public connections to Hatvan; if you arrive regionally you will generally transfer via train or bus through Budapest or Miskolc. Expect multi-step journeys and taxi/transfers for the final leg (times and prices vary).
Train: Hatvan is served by Hatvan vasútállomás on MÁV routes (Budapest-Hatvan-Miskolc corridor). Regional and intercity trains from Budapest Keleti take about 1h-1h20; second-class fares are typically in the 1,000-2,000 HUF range (buy at station kiosks or online at mavcsoport.hu). Trains are the most reliable way to reach Hatvan from Budapest.
Bus: Volánbusz operates regional buses to Hatvan from nearby towns and from Budapest’s Népliget bus station. Journey times from Budapest are roughly 1h-1h30 depending on traffic; single-ticket prices are commonly around 800-1,800 HUF (€2.2-5). Local buses and taxis serve short hops from the station to other parts of town.
