The park was established to conserve the Harz’s mountain landscapes and to restore natural forest dynamics within a human-influenced region; management focuses on habitat protection, rewilding and visitor infrastructure. Historical infrastructure such as timber roads and mountain railways remains part of the cultural landscape.
The national park covers parts of the Harz Mountains in central Germany; the highest summit in the range, the Brocken, reaches 1,141 metres and lies within the geographic area associated with the park.
