Harz
Mountains Central German low mountain range with forests
Forested mountain range in central Germany where walkers hit Brocken summit trails, slate-roofed towns, and steam-hauled narrow-gauge railways. Expect hiking, winter sports, and timbered villages with mining and folk-history museums.
The Harz is a low mountain range in central Germany spanning parts of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, known for forested ridges and rugged peaks. It has a long history of mining and became a popular recreational area in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Key attractions include the highest summit, the Brocken at 1,141 metres, historic timber-frame towns such as Goslar and Wernigerode, and preserved mining sites. The area offers a dense network of hiking trails, cycling routes and steam-hauled narrow-gauge railways that climb into the hills.
Mining of ores such as silver and copper shaped the Harz economy from medieval times; important mines and associated towns grew up around ore deposits, with Rammelsberg near Goslar operating for many centuries. Industrial decline in the 20th century gave way to conservation and tourism, and parts of the Harz are now protected.
Geographically the Harz sits roughly in the centre of Germany, forming a wooded upland between the North German Plain to the north and the Thuringian Basin to the south. Major regional centres around the range include Hanover to the northwest and Magdeburg to the northeast.
- Brocken views: Brocken summit provides panoramic views and is often shrouded in mist, forming the region's well-known weather phenomenon called Brocken spectre under certain light conditions.
- Access and trails: A network of marked trails and mountain railways connects towns such as Wernigerode, Goslar and Bad Harzburg, making the range accessible for day hikes and multi-day treks.
What to See #
- Brocken: The Brocken is the Harz's highest summit at 1,141 metres and a prominent viewpoint reached by hiking trails and the Harz narrow-gauge steam railway.
- Rammelsberg and Goslar: Rammelsberg mining complex and the historic town ensemble of Goslar, both linked to the Harz's mining history and recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Harz National Park: Harz National Park, established to protect large tracts of mountain forests, moorland and peat bogs and offering marked hiking routes and wildlife habitat.
How to Get to Harz #
The Harz mountain region is reached by train or car to gateway towns such as Goslar, Wernigerode and Quedlinburg (Deutsche Bahn serves these stations). From those towns local buses, cable cars and roads provide access into the hills and hiking trailheads; driving from nearby regional cities (e.g., Braunschweig, Magdeburg or Hannover) is common and takes around one to two hours depending on your start point. Exact transit lines and bus numbers depend on which Harz town or trailhead you’re aiming for.
Tips for Visiting Harz #
- To avoid the largest crowds on the Brocken, start your ascent early in the morning or use weekday slots outside school vacations; fog and peak visitor numbers build later in the day.
- Take the historic Brockenbahn steam railway from Wernigerode or Schierke for a scenic, less strenuous approach to the high ridge - it's a popular, reliable way to reach the Brocken summit.
- Explore beyond the summit: visitors often miss timber‑framed towns such as Goslar and Wernigerode and the quieter forest trails and caves (e.g., in Rübeland) that show a different side of the Harz.
Best Time to Visit Harz #
The Harz is best visited in summer for hiking and in winter for snow sports; choose season based on the activities you want.
