Hartmannswillerkopf
Mountain Alpine ridge and World War I memorial site
Hartmannswillerkopf in the Vosges preserves First World War trenches, a memorial ossuary and a museum. Hikers use the marked trails that traverse wartime positions; visitors study battlefield history and local mountain scenery.
Hartmannswillerkopf is a mountain and First World War battlefield in the Vosges massif of northeastern France, notable for its memorial and preserved trenches dating to the 1914-1918 fighting. The summit is the location of a national memorial and an ossuary commemorating soldiers from both sides.
The memorial complex includes a granite monument, cemetery and a small museum with displays about the frontier fighting; networked trails lead past preserved trench lines and observation posts. The summit ridge is roughly 956 metres above sea level and provides views across the Rhine plain to the east and wooded Vosges to the west.
During World War I the peak was the scene of sustained combat between French and German forces and was held and re-held in a series of assaults and counter-assaults. After the war the site was established as a memorial area; maintenance and preservation of battlefield features have continued through the 20th and 21st centuries.
Hartmannswillerkopf sits on the border of the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region, about 20-30 kilometres west of Mulhouse. The mountain is forested on its flanks with cleared summit ridges used by the memorial and is accessible by road and marked walking paths from nearby villages.
- Summit elevation and conditions: The summit reaches about 956 metres and offers views across the Rhine valley and the Vosges; winter weather can make trails icy so footwear and care are needed.
- Visit duration: The site combines open-air battlefield remains with an ossuary and museum; allow at least 1-2 hours to walk the main memorial circuit and visit displays.
What to See #
- Memorial and ossuary: The national memorial complex includes a stone ossuary and a granite monument erected to commemorate World War I fighting on the peak, with pathways linking observation points and preserved trench lines.
- Visitor centre and trails: A small visitor centre and interpretive displays explain the 1914-1918 fighting and the geology of the Vosges; walking trails loop around the summit and along preserved battlefield features.
