Hajógyári Island

Hajógyári Island (also known as Óbuda Island) is a river island in the Danube within Budapest’s Óbuda district, used as a large urban park and event site. It is best known as the venue for major music and cultural events.

Large temporary stages and infrastructure are installed on the island for major events; outside festival periods the island offers riverside promenades, lawns and sports areas. The Sziget Festival, held there since the 1990s, is one of the island’s highest-profile uses and attracts international visitors.

The island has been used for recreational and public events for decades and is integrated into Budapest’s transport network, with pedestrian and vehicular access from the Óbuda side of the river. Facilities and access vary depending on event schedules.

Geographically the island sits in the Danube within northern-central Budapest, adjacent to the Óbuda shoreline in Pest County and within easy reach of the city centre by public transport.

• Sziget Festival: Hosts the annual Sziget Festival each August, which draws several hundred thousand attendees across the festival week.
• Access: Easily reached from central Budapest by tram, bus or pedestrian bridges from the Óbuda (District III) side of the Danube.
