Hadrian's Library

Building Ancient Roman library ruins in central Athens

Near Athens’ Monastiraki square, Hadrian’s Library leaves a Roman‑era façade and courtyard; tourists pause here en route to the Agora, markets and the archaeological museums.

Main image

Hadrian’s Library is a Roman-era library and cultural complex commissioned by Emperor Hadrian in Athens around 132 AD, located immediately north of the Acropolis. It served as a major public building in the Roman period of the city.

The visible archaeological remains include a large rectangular courtyard area, a colonnaded eastern facade and scattered column drums and masonry from the original structure. The site sits next to the Roman Agora and Monastiraki, and is accessible on foot from the Acropolis and city centre.

Built by imperial initiative in 132 AD to house book collections and administrative offices, the complex functioned through the Roman imperial period and later fell into disuse and ruin as the city evolved. Excavations and conservation have exposed the layout and parts of the facade and courtyard.

The library stands in central Athens just north of the Acropolis and adjacent to the Roman Agora and Monastiraki square, making it part of the main archaeological cluster in the city centre.

How to Get to Hadrian's Library #

Hadrian’s Library stands in central Athens beside Monastiraki square. Take the Athens Metro (Lines 1 and 3) to Monastiraki station - the library is a 2-3 minute walk from the station exit. The site is also an easy walk from Syntagma and the Plaka neighbourhood (roughly 8-12 minutes on foot), and many city buses stop nearby on Ermou/Adrianou streets.

Tips for Visiting Hadrian's Library #

  • Approach Hadrian's Library from the Monastiraki/Adrianou Street area (Monastiraki Metro) and combine your stop with the nearby Roman Agora and Monastiraki Square to see several compact ancient sites without extra travel time.
  • Visit early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid tour groups in Plaka and to get better light for photography of the library's facade and columns.
  • Take the time to walk around the site's perimeter toward the Roman Agora-many visitors only glance at the front ruins and miss smaller inscriptions and relief fragments tucked into adjacent display areas.
