Gustavo Capanema Palace

Gustavo Capanema Palace in downtown Rio de Janeiro is a landmark modernist government building originally built to house Brazil’s Ministry of Education and Health. It is widely cited as a seminal work of Brazilian modernist architecture and was designed under the direction of Lúcio Costa with input from international and local modernist figures.

The building is notable for its glass facade combined with horizontal sun-shading brise-soleil, an elevated ground floor on pilotis and integrated modernist artworks including a large tile mural.
