Main image

An artificial reservoir on the Caroní River in Bolívar state, Venezuela, created by the construction of the Guri (Simón Bolívar) Dam. It is among the largest reservoirs in the country and is closely associated with Venezuela’s hydroelectric generation.

The lake is used primarily as the headwater for the hydroelectric complex at the dam; the reservoir shoreline is extensive and sparsely developed in many sectors. Boat access and shoreline activity occur in places, but the primary function of the impoundment is power storage and generation rather than tourism.

The reservoir was formed when the Guri dam was built on the Caroní River; the dam and power complex transformed a river valley into a large storage lake and altered downstream flow regimes. The area around the lake includes utility infrastructure and pockets of settlement linked to dam operations.

Geographically it sits in southeastern Bolívar state; the dam and power station are at the reservoir’s southern end and Ciudad Guayana lies downstream. The reservoir occupies a large area of the inland plateau and river valley of the Caroní basin.

  • Hydroelectric role: Formed by a major hydroelectric dam on the Caroní River, it is one of the largest artificial lakes in Venezuela and a central component of the country's power system.
  • Variable water levels: Water level and surface area can fluctuate markedly with seasonal rainfall and prolonged droughts, affecting shoreline access and boat navigation.

What to See #

  • Simón Bolívar (Guri) Dam: Sits at the southern end of the reservoir and contains the hydroelectric powerhouse and associated dam infrastructure that controls outflow from the lake.
  • Downstream urban area: Ciudad Guayana and other downstream communities lie below the dam and are the primary population centres connected to the reservoir's operations.
