Grumentum

Grumentum is the archaeological remains of a Roman-era town near modern Grumento Nova in Basilicata, Italy, preserving public buildings and street layouts from the Republican and Imperial periods. The site documents urban development in southern Italy under Roman rule.

The site features a partly preserved Roman theatre, visible street grids, and foundations of baths and public buildings, giving a sense of the town’s scale and organization. Visitors can walk among exposed masonry, excavated foundations and fragments of monumental architecture.

Originally occupied by pre-Roman populations and later Romanized, Grumentum developed through the Republican and Imperial eras and declined in Late Antiquity. Archaeological work in the 20th and 21st centuries has exposed its main public monuments and residential blocks.

The ruins sit on a hill near the modern town of Grumento Nova in the province of Potenza, overlooking the Agri valley in the interior of Basilicata.

• Site layout: Excavated ruins are concentrated on a hilltop and are best viewed on the marked walking paths that connect the theatre and public buildings.

What to See #

• Roman theatre: Partially preserved semicircular Roman theatre with surviving masonry and stage area, set into the slope of the hill and visible from the visitor path.
• Forum and baths: Remains of the town's public quarter including forum-level foundations, thermal structures and sections of defensive walls that outline the urban plan.
