Grottoes of Catullus

The Grottoes of Catullus are the ruins of a large Roman villa at the tip of the Sirmione peninsula on Lake Garda, dating to the late 1st century BC and early 1st century AD.

Built in the late Republican to early Imperial era, the complex belonged to an elite Roman owner; later writers associated it with the poet Gaius Valerius Catullus, giving the site its modern name. The ruins have been subject to archaeological study and conservation since the 19th century.

Situated at the end of the Sirmione peninsula on Lake Garda in Lombardy, the site occupies a prominent lakeside position accessible from the town of Sirmione.
