Grote Markt

Grote Markt (Antwerp) is the historic central square of Antwerp, surrounded by ornate guild houses and dominated by the Renaissance City Hall and a central fountain. It is the civic and ceremonial heart of the old city.

The square presents a compact ensemble of 16th- and later-century architecture, including the City Hall, the Brabo Fountain which illustrates a local founding legend, and a continuous row of guild façades now occupied by restaurants and shops. It is a frequent meeting place and photographic focus for visitors to Antwerp.

Historically the square served commercial and municipal functions for the city and the present City Hall dates to the 16th century, reflecting Antwerp’s importance in the early modern period. The ensemble has been maintained and restored as part of the old town core.

The Grote Markt sits in Antwerp’s historic centre between the river Scheldt and the Cathedral of Our Lady, a short walk from the main train stations and other central attractions.

• City Hall (Stadhuis): The 16th-century City Hall, built in Renaissance style, anchors one side of the square and houses municipal offices and historic civic rooms.
• Brabo Fountain: The Brabo Fountain features a sculptural group that illustrates the local legend of the hero Brabo and is a central photo point in the square.
• Guild houses: A ring of ornate guild houses with stepped gables and decorative facades surrounds the square and now contains cafes and restaurants at ground level.
