Grote Kerk (St. Bavokerk) is the large Gothic church that faces Haarlem’s central square, the Grote Markt, with much of the present stone building dating from the 14th to 16th centuries. It is one of the city’s principal historic monuments.
The interior contains a notable historic pipe organ built by Christian Müller in 1738, which has been used for concerts and was famously played by the young Mozart in 1766. The nave, choir and stained glass interiors form the main visitor highlights and the church regularly hosts concerts and cultural events.
Construction of the current brick and stone church took place in the late medieval period, replacing earlier wooden and smaller churches on the site, and its fabric reflects phases of building, repair and adaptation across centuries. Since the Reformation it has functioned as a Protestant parish church while preserving many historic fittings.
The Grote Kerk stands on the Grote Markt in central Haarlem, a short walk from the railway station and roughly 20 kilometres west of Amsterdam.
