Großes Festspielhaus

The Großes Festspielhaus is a large festival and performance hall in Salzburg, Austria, that functions as a principal venue of the Salzburg Festival. It was completed in the mid-20th century to house large-scale productions.

The main auditorium accommodates a large audience and is sized for opera, ballet and orchestral performances, with stage and backstage facilities designed for major festival productions. The building also includes foyers and rehearsal spaces used during the festival season and for year-round events.

Constructed in the mid-1900s to expand Salzburg’s capacity for large productions, the hall became central to the city’s festival infrastructure and programming. It replaced the need to adapt older historic stages when staging grand operatic works.

The Festspielhaus sits in Salzburg’s festival district near the historic city centre, on the same side of the Salzach River as many of the city’s performance venues and cultural institutions.
