Main image

Großer Zschirnstein is a prominent sandstone table hill in Saxony, Germany, within the Elbe Sandstone region and the Saxon Switzerland area. It is the largest of the Zschirnsteine formations.

The summit stands at roughly 562 metres and features a rocky plateau with cliffs that provide panoramic views over the surrounding sandstone landscape and forested valleys. Well-marked hiking paths lead to viewpoints and the summit from nearby villages.

The feature is formed from Cretaceous sandstones typical of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and has long been crossed by local forest trails; it has been used for forestry and recreation rather than as a fortified site. Climbing and walking routes developed as tourism in Saxon Switzerland increased in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The hill lies in eastern Saxony near small villages such as Reinhardtsdorf-Schöna and is part of the Saxon Switzerland recreational region, northwest of the Elbe valley and within reach of the broader Dresden area.

  • Elevation: The summit reaches about 562 metres above sea level and is the highest of the local Zschirnsteine rock formations.
  • Views: Compact summit plateau and rocky outcrops give broad views across the Elbe Sandstone landscape and nearby forests.
