Griebnitzsee is a narrow lake on the border between Potsdam (Brandenburg) and southwestern Berlin. It functions as both a local recreation area and a corridor of lakeside residential and institutional development.

Walkable promenades and moorings line parts of the shore, with small-boat traffic and waterside parks providing recreational access. The lakeside near Babelsberg is known for historic villas and landscaped grounds, while parts of the shoreline are used by the University of Potsdam.

The area around Griebnitzsee developed in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a suburban and villa district; in the Cold War era the lake sat on or near administrative boundaries between Berlin and Potsdam and later became reintegrated into the urban fabric of the region.

Griebnitzsee lies immediately west-southwest of central Berlin and on the northeastern edge of Potsdam, roughly 15-20 kilometers from Berlin’s city center. The lake runs along the municipal boundary between the two cities.

  • Public transport access: The Griebnitzsee S-Bahn station provides direct rail connections to central Berlin, making the lake readily accessible for day trips from the city.
