How to Get to Greymouth

Greymouth on New Zealand's West Coast is most commonly reached from Christchurch by the TranzAlpine train or by InterCity coach. Regional flights into Hokitika exist but road transfers are typical for the final leg.

By Air

Christchurch Airport (CHC): Christchurch is the usual gateway for Greymouth for international travellers. From Christchurch, the TranzAlpine train to Greymouth is a direct scenic option (about 4.5-5 hours); coaches are also available. Flights into Hokitika are limited and not a primary scheduled option for most travellers.

Hokitika Airport (HKK): Hokitika has limited regional flights; from Hokitika you can travel to Greymouth by road (about 45-60 minutes) by bus or car if scheduled flights are available into Hokitika at the time of travel.

By Train & Bus

Train (TranzAlpine): The TranzAlpine runs daily between Christchurch and Greymouth and is one of New Zealand’s most famous scenic rail trips - journey time about 4.5-5 hours. Book seats in advance, especially in summer.

Coach (InterCity / regional buses): InterCity coaches run between Christchurch and Greymouth and are a practical alternative to the train; travel time by coach is typically 4.5-5.5 hours depending on stops and traffic. Local bus and shuttle services provide connections around Greymouth and the West Coast.
