How to Get to Green Island #
Green Island (Queensland) is a coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef reached only by boat. Regular passenger ferries and day-trip operators depart from Cairns’ Reef Fleet Terminal in the city centre; the crossing takes about 45-60 minutes. There is no road access to the island - arrive at the terminal by car or taxi and park in Cairns before boarding the ferry.
Tips for Visiting Green Island #
- Take one of the earliest ferries from Cairns to avoid the full-day tour crowds and to get calmer water for snorkeling or glass‑bottom viewing around the reef.
- Ask your operator about snorkel/gear handovers and sheltered snorkeling spots on the western side of the cay-many visitors head straight to the beach and miss the island's short rainforest walk and shaded picnic areas.
- If you prefer fewer people on the sand and better underwater visibility, choose operators that offer smaller-group trips or timed departures rather than the large mid-day catamarans.
Best Time to Visit Green Island #
The dry season (May-October) is generally the best time for snorkeling and day trips due to calmer seas and clearer water.
