Green Gate
Building Renaissance city gate in Gdańsk, former royal residence
Gdańsk’s Green Gate fronts the Long Market and Motława river; a 16th‑century city gate with Renaissance details. Tourists pass under its arch to reach waterfront streets, museums and the riverside promenade.
Green Gate (Zielona Brama) is a Renaissance city gate on the Long Market in central Gdańsk, Poland that was built as a ceremonial residence for Polish monarchs. Construction took place in the late 16th century and the building is a prominent element of the city’s waterfront streetscape.
The gate faces the Motława river and functions as a formal city entrance from the riverfront, with a richly decorated exterior combining sculptures and architectural ornament. Over time it has served administrative and representational roles and today is integrated into Gdańsk’s historic centre and tourist route.
It stands at the western end of the Long Market, within walking distance of other major Gdańsk sites such as the Main Town Hall and St. Mary’s Church.
- Construction: Constructed between 1568 and 1571 in Renaissance style, it was designed as a ceremonial residence gate facing the Long Market and the Motlawa river.
- Position: The façade faces the Long Market and the building marks the western end of that principal thoroughfare in Gdańsk's historic centre.
