Mykonos is a Cycladic island in the Aegean Sea known for its whitewashed towns, windmills and vibrant tourist scene. It is a major destination for beaches, nightlife and summer leisure travel in Greece.
Key attractions include the waterfront district of Little Venice, the cluster of historic windmills above the main harbour and the maze of narrow streets in Mykonos Town. The island also offers a variety of beaches with different atmospheres, from organised, lively stretches to quieter coves.
Historically a maritime and trading island, Mykonos developed into a tourist destination in the 20th century and became well known internationally for its combination of traditional architecture and contemporary leisure culture. The town center retains traditional Cycladic architecture while much of the island caters to seasonal tourism.
Mykonos lies in the southern Aegean among the Cyclades, about 150 km southeast of Athens by sea and within easy ferry connections to other Cycladic islands.
- Seasonality: Peak season is July and August when ferries and flights are busiest; shoulder seasons in late spring and early autumn offer milder crowds and weather.
- Access: The island is part of the Cyclades group in the Aegean Sea and is well connected by ferry and frequent flights from Athens.
What to See #
- Mykonos Town (Chora): The island's principal harbour and main settlement, characterised by narrow alleys, whitewashed houses and a lively waterfront with shops and restaurants.
- Mykonos Windmills: A row of 16th-18th century windmills on a low hill above the town, an iconic visual landmark visible from the harbour.
- Little Venice: A shoreline district where houses front directly onto the sea with balconies and cafes, popular at sunset and for photography.
- Beaches: A selection of well-known beaches on the island's south and west coasts that range from organised, busy stretches with beach bars to quieter coves.
How to Get to Mykonos #
Mykonos Island is served by flights to Mykonos Airport (JMK) from Athens and by ferries from Piraeus, Rafina and other Cycladic islands. Ferries arrive at the old port (Chora) or the new port (Tourlos/New Port); the main town (Chora) is a short taxi ride or a 10-30 minute walk from the ports.
On arrival there are regular local buses from the ports to the central Fabrika bus station in Mykonos Town, and taxis and rental vehicles are widely available for reaching beaches and attractions.
Tips for Visiting Mykonos #
- See Mykonos Town (Chora) right at dawn - the windmills, Little Venice and empty labyrinthine streets are far more atmospheric before cruise ships and day-trippers arrive.
- Avoid peak mid-day crowds by heading to quieter northern or eastern beaches, or inland to Ano Mera village, where local tavernas and a 16th-century monastery offer a calmer contrast to town.
- Many visitors stick to the main waterfront; walk a few blocks inland and to the alleys off Matogiannia to find small artisan shops, quieter cafés and photo opportunities that the main promenades miss.
- If you want to dodge the busiest periods in town, schedule your main exploration for late afternoon into evening when day crowds have left and restaurants open for a more relaxed experience.
Best Time to Visit Mykonos #
Late spring and early autumn give the best combination of warm weather, open services, and far fewer crowds than peak summer.
