A volcanic Cycladic island, Milos is known for white rock beaches like Sarakiniko, fishing villages such as Klima, and boat tours that access sea caves and secluded coves; seafood is a local draw.
Milos is a volcanic island in the southern Aegean Sea, part of Greece’s Cyclades archipelago, known for its dramatic coastline and rich archaeological heritage. The island’s geology is volcanic, producing a variety of coastal formations and mineral deposits.
Colourful beaches, sea-carved rock formations, and archaeological sites tied to ancient mining and maritime activity. The island is especially famous as the place where the statue known as the Venus de Milo was discovered in the early 19th century, and museum collections and local archaeology reflect continuous human occupation from prehistoric times.
Milos developed economically through mining and maritime trade in antiquity and later became a tourist destination because of its natural harbors and unique geology. Contemporary visitors are drawn to its coastal villages, small museums and marine activities.
Geographically Milos lies in the southern Cyclades, southwest of the major Aegean islands such as Naxos and Paros; the main harbour at Adamas is the typical arrival point for ferries and boats.
- Venus de Milo discovery: Best known as the island where the ancient statue Venus de Milo was discovered in 1820; finds from the island are central to its archaeological profile.

How to Get to Milos #
Milos is an island in the Cyclades reached by air or sea. Regular domestic flights link Athens (Eleftherios Venizelos) to Milos Airport (MLO); from the airport it’s a short drive (about 10-15 minutes) to the main port of Adamas. Alternatively, car or passenger ferries sail from the Port of Piraeus (Athens) and from other Saronic/Cycladic islands - crossings to Adamas typically take a few hours depending on the vessel (operators include Blue Star Ferries). The harbour at Adamas is a short walk (a few minutes) into the town.
Tips for Visiting Milos #
- Arrive on the first ferry into Adamas or book early-morning boat tours-Adamas is Milos's main port and most sea excursions to Kleftiko and the southern sea caves depart from there, so starting from Adamas saves transit time.
- Visit Sarakiniko at sunrise (or late afternoon) to see the lunar white rock with far fewer people; parking and the footpaths fill quickly during mid-day, and snorkeling/photography are much easier before the crowds arrive.
- Don't skip the small archaeological sites and village walks around Plaka and Tripiti-many visitors focus only on beaches, but the ancient theatre and panoramic viewpoints near Tripiti are close to the main towns and often less crowded.
- If you want quieter beaches, go inland from the main seaside villages or take a circumnavigation boat trip to isolated coves (rather than relying solely on the island's few public buses that concentrate on popular beaches).
Best Time to Visit Milos #
Visit Milos in late spring-early autumn for the best combination of warm weather, accessible beaches and active ferry connections.
