Great War Island

Great War Island (Serbian: Veliko ratno ostrvo) is a river island at the junction of the Sava and Danube rivers adjacent to Belgrade. The island is largely undeveloped and functions as an important green space and wildlife habitat within the urban area.

The island contains beaches, reed beds and wooded zones that attract waterbirds, waders and other wildlife, and it is used for informal recreation by locals. It also contains traces of historical defensive uses owing to its strategic position at the river confluence.

Historically the island has played roles in Belgrade’s military and urban history because of its strategic location; in recent decades it has been managed primarily as a natural area with an emphasis on conservation and limited recreational use.

Geographically the island lies immediately downstream from downtown Belgrade at the point where the Sava flows into the Danube; it is visible from riverside promenades in the city and accessed by boat from several riverside points.
