Great Sandy National Park
Park Queensland park encompassing coastal dunes and rainforests
Queensland’s Great Sandy National Park covers coastal dunes, rainforest pockets and parts of Fraser Island/Cooloola; visitors come for 4WD beach driving, freshwater lakes, walking tracks and whale watching along a long sandy coastline.
Great Sandy National Park is a protected area in Queensland that covers coastal mainland sections and offshore islands, including the large sand island known as K’gari or Fraser Island. It contains coastal dunes, heathlands, rainforest pockets and freshwater dune lakes, and is one of Queensland’s major conservation parks.
Extensive sandy beaches suitable for vehicle-based beach driving, rainforest growing on sand, and freshwater dune lakes such as Lake McKenzie. The park is widely visited for four-wheel-driving, camping, hiking, birdwatching and freshwater swimming on the island lakes.
The Park protects country that is traditional land of the Butchulla people and has a history of timber extraction and sand harvesting prior to expanded conservation protection. The Fraser Island portion is internationally recognised for its geomorphology and natural values and is listed as a World Heritage area.
Located off the central Queensland coast, the park stretches along parts of the Sunshine Coast and Fraser Coast regions and includes both island and mainland components; the main access points to island areas are via vehicle ferry or barge services from the Queensland coast.
- Vehicle access and tides: Much of the park is remote and vehicle access to beaches and sand tracks typically requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle and careful attention to tides and local conditions.
- Permits and camping: Camping in designated sites requires permits and the park contains both day-visit areas and extensive backcountry that needs careful preparation.
What to See #
- Fraser Island (K'gari): The offshore island section that includes K'gari (Fraser Island), the world's largest sand island, with long beaches, coastal dunes and freshwater dune lakes.
- Cooloola coastal area: A mainland coastal section noted for large colored sand cliffs, extensive coastal dunes and remnant vegetation on the Cooloola coast north of Noosa.
- Freshwater dune lakes: Perched freshwater dune lakes such as the well-known clear-water Lake McKenzie are found within the park and are formed by rainwater trapped in the dunes.
How to Get to Great Sandy National Park #
Access depends on which section of the park is intended. Cooloola North is reachable by car from Noosa (Cooloola Cove roads); K’Gari/Fraser Island requires ferry or barge from River Heads (near Hervey Bay) or long 4WD beach access. Check Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service for permits and vehicle requirements.
Tips for Visiting Great Sandy National Park #
