Great Meteoron monastery
Religious Site Largest Meteora monastery perched atop sandstone pillars
Perched on a Meteora pillar, the Great Meteoron Monastery is the largest of the Meteora monasteries; visitors arrive for Orthodox iconography, cliff‑top courtyards and walking routes that connect several rock‑top monasteries.
The Great Meteoron Monastery is the largest monastery in the Meteora complex in Thessaly, central Greece, and was established as a monastic community in the 14th century. It sits atop one of the tall sandstone pillars that define the Meteora landscape and is often referred to as the chief monastery of the group.
The complex contains the katholikon dedicated to the Transfiguration, cloisters, cells and a museum with icons and liturgical objects, and visitors come for the surviving frescoes, religious architecture and the panoramic views over the plain. The monastery remains an active religious community while also being one of the best-known monastic sites in Meteora.
Founded in the 14th century by the hermit-monk Athanasios (commonly credited with organizing the community at Meteora), the Great Meteoron grew over subsequent centuries into a sizeable monastic settlement. Buildings and frescoes were added and renovated through the 15th to 17th centuries; the site has experienced periods of decline and restoration but has retained continuous religious use into the present day.
The monastery stands on one of the prominent sandstone pillars at Meteora, just above the town of Kalambaka and the village of Kastraki in the Trikala regional unit of Thessaly. The rock pillars and buildings form part of the larger Meteora UNESCO cultural landscape.
- Practical visitor information: Tourists must observe modest dress and the monastery may close to visitors for religious services on certain days; limited opening hours and an entrance contribution are common.
- Access considerations: Access requires climbing steps and a short uphill approach from the access road, so some mobility is required to reach interior buildings and viewpoints.
What to See #
- Katholikon (Church of the Transfiguration): The main church (katholikon) dedicated to the Transfiguration contains extensive post-byzantine fresco cycles and icons dating mainly from the 16th and 17th centuries.
- Monastic museum: A small monastic museum preserves liturgical objects, manuscripts and icons collected by the community over several centuries.
- Viewpoints and terraces: Terraces and viewpoints on and around the rock provide panoramic views over the Thessalian plain and the town of Kalambaka below.
How to Get to Great Meteoron monastery #
The monasteries are accessed from the towns of Kalabaka and Kastraki.
