Great Island
Island Island in Cork harbour featuring historic town Cobh
Great Island in Cork Harbour includes the town of Cobh, St Colman’s Cathedral and maritime museums; visitors trace emigration history, Titanic connections and harbour ferries.
Great Island is an island in Cork Harbour, County Cork, Ireland, that contains the harbour town of Cobh and adjacent historic sites. It occupies a central position in one of Europe’s largest natural harbours and has been a major Irish port for centuries.
The town of Cobh (formerly Queenstown) occupies much of the island’s shoreline and is known for its maritime history, passenger piers and preserved waterfront. Immediately offshore is Spike Island, a fortified island whose castle, batteries and 19th-20th-century prison complex form one of the harbour’s principal heritage attractions.
Historically the island developed around shipping, transatlantic passenger services and naval facilities; today it combines active port operations with tourism focused on maritime heritage. Access is by road links and short ferry services that connect Cobh and nearby points around Cork Harbour.
The island sits in Cork Harbour on Ireland’s south coast, within Munster and close to the city of Cork and other harbour settlements.
- Titanic connection: Cobh was the last port of call for the RMS Titanic in April 1912; the town has maritime museums and memorials relating to emigration and shipping.
- Spike Island access: Spike Island's fortifications offer guided tours and are reached by short ferry trips from Cobh harbour.
What to See #
- Cobh: Cobh is the principal town on the island, historically a major transatlantic passenger port and now a ferry and cruise port with preserved 19th- and 20th-century townscape.
- Spike Island: Spike Island lies off the island's southern shore and contains a multi-period fortress complex and former prison that is open to visitors as a heritage site.
How to Get to Great Island #
Great Island (home to the town of Cobh) sits in Cork Harbour southeast of Cork city. From Cork Kent Station take the Cork-Cobh suburban rail line direct to Cobh (journey roughly 20-30 minutes); by car it’s about a 20-30 km drive from Cork city via the N25/R624 into Cobh. Cobh town and its quays are compact - attractions are a short walk from the train station or town car parks.
Tips for Visiting Great Island #
- Use the Cork-Cobh train (terminus at Cobh town) rather than driving when possible - the rail service delivers you to the heart of Great Island and avoids very limited parking and harbor traffic.
- Plan your visit outside large cruise-ship calls: Cobh is a major cruise port and the town can be crowded during embarkation/disembarkation hours; early morning or late afternoon visits are noticeably quieter.
- Walk the seafront promenade and the town's heritage trails after arriving - many visitors concentrate on the Titanic/Cobh museum and miss pleasant viewpoints around the harbor and the town's maritime architecture.
Best Time to Visit Great Island #
Best visited May through September for the mildest weather, longer days and more reliable ferry/service schedules.
