The Great Basilica in Plovdiv is an archaeological complex preserving the remains of a large late Roman or early Byzantine basilica in the city of Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
Visitors can see extensive floor mosaics, the footprint of the nave and side aisles, and surviving column bases and walls that outline the basilica’s plan. The site presents material evidence of Christian worship in the urban centre during the late antique period.
Constructed in the later Roman period, the basilica served as a major Christian church in Philippopolis and was altered over successive centuries before falling out of use. Excavations have uncovered its mosaic decoration and architectural layout, allowing the plan to be studied and displayed.
The basilica lies within Plovdiv’s historical core and is presented as an open-air archaeological site accessible from the city centre.
