The Ara Maxima Herculis, or Great Altar of Hercules, was an ancient open-air altar and cult site in Rome located in the Forum Boarium area near the Tiber River. It served as one of the principal cult sites dedicated to Hercules in the city.
Remains of the altar are not presented as a single freestanding monument in the modern landscape but are associated with the broader archaeological area of the Forum Boarium, which includes the well-preserved Temple of Hercules Victor and the nearby riverside ruins. The area offers views of late Republican and Imperial period urban fabric and ancient riverfront sanctuaries.
The altar and its rites are attested in Roman literary sources as an early and important cult of Hercules in the city. The site was part of Rome’s cattle market district in antiquity and continued to be referenced through the Republican and Imperial periods.
Located in the Forum Boarium on the left bank of the Tiber in central Rome, close to the modern Via del Mare and within walking distance of the Capitoline Hill and the historic riverside quarter.
