Island Remote Antarctic island in the Amundsen Sea

Like many Antarctic islands, Grant Island has been charted during 20th-century exploration and survey work; it does not have a history of settlement or sustained human use.
Grant Island lies off the Antarctic coastline in the Southern Ocean, within the broad area of West Antarctica and subject to the Antarctic Treaty System.
- Status: Uninhabited and ice-covered, it lies off the Antarctic coast and is subject to the environmental protections and research protocols that apply to the region.
Tips for Visiting Grant Island #
- Grant Island is remote and accessible only by Antarctic expedition ship; plan visits through an experienced operator and expect Zodiac transfers rather than self-arranged landings.
- All landings and close approaches are governed by Antarctic Treaty/IAATO rules-biosecurity procedures (boots, equipment checks) and strict wildlife disturbance limits are mandatory.
- Many operators do not permit landings at every island; be prepared that the best views may be from the ship or Zodiac and that landing permits are assessed case‑by‑case.
Best Time to Visit Grant Island #
Grant Island is only realistically visited in the austral summer (November-March) when sea ice retreats and ship access is possible.
