Grande Chartreuse

Grande Chartreuse is the motherhouse of the Carthusian order, located in the Chartreuse Mountains of southeastern France. Founded in 1084 by Saint Bruno, it is the principal monastery of the Carthusian religious family and remains an active, cloistered community.

Because the monastery is an active cloister, the interior of the complex is not open to the general public; visitors can view the exterior from nearby roads and footpaths and can visit the museum and interpretation centre in the village of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse for historical and cultural context. The Carthusian order is also associated with the production of the herbal liqueur Chartreuse, which has historical ties to the monastery.

The house was suppressed during revolutionary periods in French history and later reoccupied by monks; through centuries it has continued as the central community for Carthusian monastic life. Conservation maintains the remote and contemplative character of the site while existing visitor facilities provide background on the order’s history and practices.

The monastery sits high in the Chartreuse massif in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, north of Grenoble, set among steep forested slopes and alpine pastures in the Chartreuse Regional Natural Park.
