Grand Combin
Mountain High Valais massif with extensive glaciation
A 4,000‑plus‑metre massif in Valais, Grand Combin is known for large glaciers and demanding mountaineering routes. Climbers come for technical ascents; surrounding valleys provide alpine trekking and high‑altitude scenery.
Grand Combin is a major glaciated massif in the western Pennine Alps of Valais, Switzerland, whose highest summit rises to about 4,314 metres. It is one of the highest massifs in the Alps and is notable for its extensive glaciers and steep faces.
The massif comprises several high summits and broad glaciated slopes that attract experienced mountaineers and ski-mountaineers. Routes typically involve long glacier approaches and crevassed terrain, and the massif is known for objective hazards such as avalanches and serac fall.
The Grand Combin massif was explored and climbed in the 19th century during the golden age of alpinism and remains a classic high-Alpine objective. Mountain huts and established routes provide access for ascents and crossings but conditions are demanding.
Grand Combin sits in the southwestern Valais canton, close to the Italian border, dominating the skyline above nearby valleys. Access for climbing and approaches is typically from Valais valley towns and alpine trailheads.
- Climbing: A heavily glaciated massif with technical alpine routes; climbs are typically undertaken in the summer alpine season and require glacier skills.
- Location note: Located in the Valais canton near the border with Italy, the massif is visible from surrounding valleys and is a landmark for high-Alpine travel in the region.
What to See #
- Main summit (Combin de Grafeneire): The main summit, often referred to as Combin de Grafeneire or Grand Combin, reaches 4,314 metres and is the highest point of the massif.
- Corbassière Glacier: The Corbassière Glacier lies on the northern slopes and provides the principal glacial approach routes used by mountaineers and ski-mountaineers.
Tips for Visiting Grand Combin #
- Grand Combin is a remote, high-alpine massif where glacier travel and crevasse risk are the norm-only attempt routes with proper glacier skills, rope teams and up-to-date route information or hire a certified mountain guide.
- Most common ascents use staffed mountain huts as base camps (for example on the mountain's northern approaches), so reserve hut berths well before the July-September climbing window to secure a sensible acclimatization schedule.
- Plan logistics from the nearest Valais valley settlements and expect long approaches: many day visitors miss the panorama because they don't continue past initial viewpoints, so allow extra time to reach classic viewpoints or the nearest hut for reliable views of the massif.
Best Time to Visit Grand Combin #
Best visited in midsummer for the safest conditions on approaches and glacier routes, while remembering the high summit stays below freezing.
