Granada Cathedral
Church Renaissance cathedral in Granada with an elaborate interior
Granada Cathedral stands near the Royal Chapel and Alhambra; visitors tour its Renaissance nave, cloisters and nearby tapas streets.
Granada Cathedral, formally the Cathedral of the Incarnation, is the principal Renaissance cathedral of Granada and the seat of the local archdiocese. Construction began in the early 16th century, and the building is noted for its Renaissance plan with later Baroque elements.
The interior centres on a large nave and transept with chapels and altarpieces, while the exterior presents a sculpted façade and towers that define the cathedral’s city-centre presence. The nearby Royal Chapel (Capilla Real) contains the tombs of Ferdinand and Isabella and forms part of the ecclesiastical ensemble around the cathedral.
Work on the cathedral started after the Reconquista in the 16th century, with significant input from architects including Diego de Siloé; construction and decorative phases continued into the 17th and 18th centuries, producing a mix of Renaissance and Baroque features.
The cathedral stands in central Granada, adjacent to the Royal Chapel and close to the Albayzín and other historic districts, making it a frequent first stop for visitors to the city.
- Construction and style: Construction began in the early 16th century and the building blends Renaissance design with later Baroque additions; Diego de Siloé was an early architect involved in the project.
What to See #
- Nave and transept: The main nave and transept form the cathedral's principal interior volume and contain the high altar and choir area used for liturgical functions.
- Royal Chapel (nearby): The adjacent Royal Chapel (Capilla Real) is a separate, nearby building that holds the Catholic Monarchs' royal tombs and is often visited alongside the cathedral.
How to Get to Granada Cathedral #
Granada Cathedral lies in the heart of Granada on Calle Gran Vía de Colón at Plaza de las Pasiegas. It is an easy walk from the city’s main bus station (Estación de Autobuses) and the train station - expect about 15-25 minutes on foot from either station into the historic centre.
If driving, follow signs to the city centre/Albaicín and park in nearby public car parks; the cathedral is pedestrian‑friendly and best reached on foot once in the historic core.
Tips for Visiting Granada Cathedral #
- Go right at opening on a weekday to beat the guided‑tour rush and have the main nave and choir less crowded for photography and quiet viewing.
- Buy a combined ticket for the Cathedral and the adjacent Royal Chapel (Capilla Real) if you plan to see both - queuing for each separately often takes much longer than a combined entry.
- Don't skip the side chapels and sacristy: many visitors rush the central nave and miss richly decorated chapels and the cathedral's impressive choir stalls and altarpieces.
